Why I Always Have a Wide Range of Foundations in My Kit & Why It Matters
As a woman of color, finding the right foundation shade is super important to me. I’m all about a natural, clean base—not too heavy or overdone. To get that look, my foundation has to match my skin as closely as possible. It’s all about feeling comfortable in my own skin when I step out the door. And when I think about my models, I put myself in their shoes—my kit has to work for them too.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard things like, “Makeup artists never have my color” or “I’m so glad you’re a woman of color!” It’s heartbreaking, honestly. That lack of shade variety can make people feel insecure, like they’re not being seen. As a makeup artist, I never want anyone sitting in my chair to feel that way. Everyone deserves to feel confident and beautiful.
That’s why I’ve made sure my kit is stocked with everything from the lightest to the darkest shades—and everything in between! Over the years, it’s become easier to find a variety of shades, thanks to brands like Fenty, Uoma, and Mented. But let’s not forget, brands like Makeup Forever, Estee Lauder, and Iman Cosmetics were already offering a great range of shades long before.
The point is—our kits can be full, and they should be! Every client, no matter their skin tone, should feel like they’re getting the best of what’s available. It’s all about making sure everyone feels seen and celebrated.
